So, it appears as reported by the NY Times that Sabine Schaefer, a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Germany, recently looked at the effect of walking on working memory and found that “when we sit all day, electrical activity in the muscles drops… leading to a cascade of harmful metabolic effects.” What is depressing is that she concludes that even if we work out regularly – it still doesn’t offset the damage caused by sitting at your desk. Lovely! But it gets even better, there is now NEW evidence regarding sitting at your desk all day. Call it the one two punch of work – so sitting at your desk not only slowly kills you but now it makes you more stupid.
Not to be all doom and gloom, scientists did find that people often have creative breakthroughs whenever our minds are disengaged from the problem we’re dealing with – which makes sense. So what are we to do? Get up from your desk as often as possible. Go for a walk at lunch, get up every 30 minutes or so to walk to the water cooler or walk to the loo. Do something besides sitting for hours at a time. Hey, it worked for Einstein so it can definitely work for you.
